By LaJuan Tallo| 3/23/09

The opportunity to see a Tony award-winning Broadway musical does not come along often, but this spring audiences will have the chance to see “Fiddler on the Roof” with Chaim Topol, the star of the original motion picture in the leading role.

fiddlerOn Saturday, May 9, the Division of Continuing Education at Northwest Mississippi Community College, is offering a Lifelong Learners’ trip to see this beloved musical at the Orpheum Theatre in Memphis.

The deadline to register for the performance is Wednesday, April 15, according to Patricia Lowder, coordinator of Continuing Education. The trip fee, which includes travel and admission, is $55. The performance begins at 2 p.m. The van will leave Northwest at 12:15 that day, Lowder said.

“Fiddler on the Roof” has captured the hearts of people all over the world with its universal appeal. This performance at the Orpheum is part of a national tour that is giving people the opportunity to see Topol perform as Tevye, the role that made him a legend. He starred in the 1971 film adaptation of the musical. The film won three Oscars.

“Fiddler” is based on the stories of Sholom Aleichem. It takes place in the Jewish village of Anatevka in Tsarist Russia in 1905 and centers on the character of Tevye, a poor milkman, and his daughters'  marriages.
