See the Stars of Lawrence Welk February 15 in Germantown

by LaJaun Tallo| 12/2/08

This February, WKNO in Memphis will present “The Stars of Lawrence Welk”  featuring Guy Hovis and Ralna English and Northwest Mississippi Community College’s Lifelong Learners will have a chance to be a part of this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.  Jan. 7 is the deadline to sign up to see these fabulous performers according to Patricia Lowder, coordinator of the Division of Continuing Education.

Hovis and English, two of the show’s most beloved stars, will be in concert at the Germantown Performing Arts Center on Sunday, Feb. 15 at
2 p.m.  The cost of the trip is $40, which includes travel and admission, according to Lowder. The group will leave Northwest at 12:30 p.m.

Hovis, a native of Tupelo, began his television career on “Art Linkletter’s House Party” in 1967. He played nightclubs and television shows throughout the country. At the “Horn” nightclub in Santa Monica, he met English, a talented singer from Lubbock, Texas, who was a regular on the Welk show. The two were married in 1969. English asked Lawrence Welk to allow her husband to sing a duet with her on the annual Christmas show, and the two became an instant hit. They appeared together on the Welk show for many years, becoming the most popular act since the Lennon Sisters. The two divorced in 1984, but continue to appear together on stage, touring the country.
